3. Three Industry Writing Tips

1. Emphasize your interest in customer service

An insurance agent who can’t work with customers is one who won’t be employed for long. This job requires a certain degree of social competence that many fields simply don’t require. Not only should you mention your interest in customer service throughout your cover letter, but you should also write with a friendly tone. Look at how Elroy mixes his focus on customer service throughout his writing:

Applicants who are able to convey their social skills and a genuine passion for serving others will stand out to hiring managers. Try to achieve a similar effect with your cover letter.

2. Research the company, make a connection

Hiring managers often go through piles of applications during their hunt for the perfect candidate. Making yours stand out is critical, and you must do so quickly before they move onto the next potential hire. One way to do this is to make an emotional connection with your cover letter.

There are a few ways to achieve this, but the most obvious way is to find out the name of the hiring manager and use it. Never write “to whom it may concern” or some iteration of this — it’s too impersonal.

Also, see if you can discover what the company’s future goals are, and show how you can positively contribute to these goals.
This shows a degree of proactivity that is missing from many applications, and makes your cover letter immediately stand out. Candidates who are able to paint themselves into a company’s future with their writing are well on their way to landing a job interview.

You can also try to find what charities your target company supports, and mention how you appreciate their contribution to your community (or society in general). Similar to bringing up the company’s future goals, this also shows you’ve done your research and are serious about the possibility of working there.

With a little extra effort, you can position yourself as the insurance agent candidate who really means business.

3. Highlight one relevant example of work experience

Ever hear the expression “all talk, no walk?” A cover letter (like a resume) can also include a concrete example or two of what you bring to the table. In our example, Mr. LeFonz brings up how he “regularly exceeded sales quotas,” and went into detail about how he did this. If you have a similar piece of relevant evidence, fit it into your letter.

No experience? Don’t worry! Think of a time when you used your communication skills to mediate a tough situation (in school or outside the classroom). If you have any experience that is relevant to being an insurance agent, don’t be afraid to include it!

If you’re struggling to think of a good example, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Have I ever been commended for my customer service skills by management?
  • Do I have any relevant awards?
  • Did I ever exceed sales quotas in a previous position? How often?
  • Have I ever received a positive review from a client? Did I receive numerous positive reviews?
  • How much did I help my past employers improve their sales? In what ways did I help them do so?

Think of ways you made an impact at your previous job. Fitting in a key example into your cover letter is an effective way to add some weight to your writing.
